Public Charter Schools
A public charter school is a public school that, in accordance with an enabling state statute, has been granted a charter exempting it from selected state or local rules and regulations. A public charter school may be a newly created school or it may previously have been a public or private school.
Public charter schools can originate in one of three ways:
* A newly created school that was not a public or private school nor a part of a public or private school before becoming a public charter school.
* A pre-existing public school that was a public school or a part of a public school before becoming a public charter school.
* A pre-existing private school that was a private school or a part of a private school before becoming a public charter school.
